BiographyThe young Roshu, son of a powerful officer in the Kyoto mint of the Tokugawa shogunate, was raised in luxury and refined culture. But in 1714 his father was implicated in mismanagement of the mint, and the family was exiled in disgrace. Roshu never recovered from this calamity; little is known of his reclusive life thereafter.
