The Guilin area in Guangxi province is famous for its mountainous landscapes. The underlying rock is limestone, and erosion by the Ji Jiang River has produced many strange shapes and caves. Adding to Guilin's picturesque nature are the many temples in the outlying area. This view from high above the gorge gives a good sense of the dramatic natural setting.
