The primary patrons of Shokosai's baskets in the 1800s were people associated with the sencha tea ceremony. Sencha practitioners favored intricate Chinese-style baskets such as this and those on either side. Before Shokosai began signing his works, many Japanese basket makers passed their works off as having been made in China.
