BiographyTorii Kotondo belonged to the Torii family, the oldest thriving school, which was renowned for producing prints of the Kabuki theater during the 18th and 19th centuries. He studied painting under Kobori Tomone and Kaburagi Kiyokata. In his early years he painted theatrical pictures, a special interest of his family. Around 1920, he began to produce woodblock prints. Kotondo's women were characterized by subtle elegance and innocent beauty.
