Hashiguchi GoyoJapanese, 1880 - 1921

Goyo was an outstanding print designer of the early 20th century. Born in Kyushu, he studied the Western style painting in Tokyo, and eventually graduated from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in 1905 as one of the most promising students of his time. Around this time he began to design color prints at the suggestion of Watanabe Shozaburo, a publisher in Tokyo and advocate for reviving the great ukiyo-e tradition. This print is one of the most famous among the artist's oeuvre.
