BiographyA native of Nanhai, Guangdong province, Huang Junbi began his study of painting in his youth, working with the traditional method of copying ancient masterpieces. Like many other artists, upon the Communist takeover in 1949 Huang left mainland China for Taiwan. He pursued a successful teaching career; among his students was Madame Chiang Kai-shek, the wife of the Chinese military and political leader who became president of the Republic of China. As professor and head of National Taiwan Normal University, Huang was influential in promoting conservative painting styles. He made trips to the U.S. in 1957, 1966, and 1969 to exhibit his work. In 1960 he was a fellow at the Brazil Art Institute.
