More Information
Beginning in the middle Yayoi period, many vessels were finished on a revolving turntable with a carved wooden paddle. Paddling also compacted the clay body, making the pot less likely to crack or break from temperature changes during firing. The high-necked form of this bowl is found throughout the late Yayoi and Kofun periods (see two examples in nearby cases). The continuity of this form suggests a gradual transition of forms and technology.
