This dramatic late autumn scene presents a contrast between the faded crimson and the weathered gray of foliage. The two colored areas are anchored by a diagonal beige branch, which a wasp uses as a bridge to access the dry bushes.

Placing a delicate insect within warm-colored foliage exemplifies the type of compositions for which Chao Shao-an is best known, as he notes in the inscription:
