More InformationChao Shao-an frequently created new visions of one of his favorite subjects—the bird in spring. Here, a bird stands on a thick horizontal branch combined with vertical branches to form a cross in the composition. The realistic look of the work is enhanced by the bird’s position, bent slightly forward in profile. The yellow and reddish flecks create an atmosphere of spring. The artist’s inscription reveals that he painted what he saw, probably from his apartment:
Suddenly, as I lean over the balcony railing,
There is a hint of spring ahead.
