More Information
Some features of this figure's pose and costume, such as the gesture with one hand raised, the tabard covering a wide-sleeved tunic, and the trousers tied at knees, were maintained from the Six Dynasties through the Tang period. The tremendously large size of the figure, as well as its precise proportions with a sharply carved face and wide shoulders, mark the piece as a product of an era when sculptural techniques had been highly developed, sometime after the middle sixth century. Nevertheless, the small cap in the two-petal-fan shape with a horizontal spike through the intersection appears in figures from the Northern Qi through the Tang. A powerful capability of the sculptor is seen in this figure's awe-inspiring execution.
