More Information
Three oranges (san yuan) are a pictorial pun for the three top candidates in the three civil service examinations (jieyuan, huiyuan, and zhuangyuan). The inclusion of the young archer piercing the oranges with his arrows implies that he will score top marks three times in a row. A candidate going for his examinations would have worn such a purse for good luck.
