More Information

Built by the British in 1835, the Kashmir Gate, built into one of the walls of old Delhi, originally had a single opening. This was expanded to a double gateway in 1857. After Indians rebelling against British rule had taken Delhi, this gate was the site of a famous assault that led to the recapture of the city by the British. Ironically, it was the British-ordered strengthening of the Delhi wall that made the city so difficult to reconquer.

Most British tourists felt it was a must to add such photographs to albums commemorating trips to India.
