More InformationDurga, having been brought forth by the male gods and endowed with their most powerful weapons, kills a buffalo demon, which was defeating them. In this representation Durga is accompanied by her lion and holds the struggling demon by its tongue so she can drive her trident into its throat.
The face of the sculpture was, for unknown reasons, destroyed long ago. At some point, someone then tried clumsily to carve out a new face where the old face had been. This recarving was so disfiguring and distracting that the museum decided to have conservators fill it in, leaving the face blank.
