BiographyKaiseki was born in Kii Province (modern Wakayama Prefecture), to a family of commoners who had once been Samurai. In Kyoto, he studied painting under Ike no Taiga (1723-76), the greatest master of all Japanese literati painters. Returning to Kii in 1797, Kaiseki served the Lord of Kii as the official painter. Unlike his teacher Taiga, who made free use of both Northern and Southern school styles, as well as Japanese decorative tradition, Kaiseki followed the pure Southern school style which had been practiced by the Chinese literati for centuries.
