Fu ShanChinese, 1606 - 1684

Fu Shan is considered one of the most creative and original calligraphers of the 1600s. A native of Shanxi province, Fu began to study Taoism and the Confucian classics at age six. He remained loyal to the Ming dynasty after its fall in 1644, choosing to live in poverty on sales of his calligraphy

and paintings rather than serve the foreign-ruled court of the new Qing dynasty. Fu also managed a Chinese pharmacy.
