Wang Hui

Wang Hui is by far the best known of the artists involved with this scroll.

He was born in a small town near Suzhou to a family of professional

painters. He was exceptionally skilled even as a youth and early in his

career his abilities were recognized by one of the leading painters of his

time. Through this painters introduction, Wang Hui gained access to

other leading artists and collectors. While the ideal of the scholar elite

was to be an amateur artist, Wang Hui certainly made his living through

his art and works by him were in great demand throughout his life. His

interpretations of ancient styles served as a model for many painters of

later generations.
