During the early 1970s Fang Zhaoling spent time in Carmel, California, studying with the Chinese painter Zhang Daqian (1899–1983). By 1975 Fang had returned to London, where, remembering the plants Zhang had at his California home, also painted this image in a style influenced by that of her teacher
