More Information
This small cabinet is in the form of a wooden rucksack (oi). Traveling monks and mountain ascetics often used this type of pack to carry Buddhist statues, sutras, ritual instruments, and clothes. The doors of this cabinet are decorated with two three-clawed dragons, one clutching a pearl, and the wooden pieces of the structure are lacquered black and inlaid with mother-of-pearl. This cabinet might have contained sencha tea implements (kikyaku).
