More Information

These three flower paintings (B62D47.1-.3), now mounted as hanging scrolls, were once panels in a six-panel folding screen of seasonal blossoms. The painting in the middle depicts autumn flowers. Cockscombs of two different colors dominate this vertical composition that also includes (counterclockwise) white yamabuki (Kerriajaponica), bellflowers (kikyo), blossoming white radish (hana-daikon), and pink thistles. The other paintings depict summer flowers such as lilies, pinks, and hollyhocks.

The masterful control of colors, forms, and placement of the floral motifs in the painting suggest that it was created by a painter of the Rimpa school, which originated in Kyoto and specialized in decorative flower paintings.
