Eating cold food on a rainy day.
Guimao year (1963), spring. Chao Shao-an at Hong Kong.
Four sparrows sit on a deciduous tree branch. Chao's reference to eating cold food in the inscription implies this was painted around the time of the Qingming Festival in early April. Also known as Tomb Sweeping Day, it is a day to remember and honor one's ancestors through prayer, offering of foods, and cleaning the graves of the deceased. It is customary to eat only cold foods on the day before the Qingming Festival.
