More Information
Multipurpose lacquer boxes like this became popular in the eighteenth century, when the emperors favored the highly detailed work of such pieces. Scenes carved on this box expand from the top of the lid to the lobed panels around the lower borders. The depictions of the daily life of peoples in the countryside were meant to reflect the peace and prosperity of the imperial era.
