Jade vessels such as this were inspired by contemporary monochrome porcelains being perfected at the imperial kilns under the intense scrutiny of the Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong emperors (r. 1662-1722, 1723-1735, and 1736-1795, respectively). The fluid profile, smooth surface, and pure color of the jade versions belie the difficulty of their manufacture in obdurate stone. Such jade evocations are typical of sophisticated eighteenth-century cross-media productions.
