INSCRIPTION:
Study of Willow Village, painted in Taiwan by Xu Ying from Tongcheng, spring of the year bingwu [1966].
In this work a group of three men in traditional garb are shown enjoying the view from a riverside pavilion. The river, its banks lined with large willow trees, recedes into the distance. The significance of these trees is explained in Xu Ying's writing on the painting: he had depicted the fishing and farming life in his hometown Liuzhuang—literally "Willow Village."
