Not on viewDecorated with the same treatment as (cat. no. 479), drawing over a slip and cutting off the glaze around the lower bottom, confirm this vase as a product in the pengcheng tradition. Both have hard bodies. Among outstanding cizhou productions during the Ming period were a variety of large jars and vases. Early Ming cizhou ware retained much of the artistic style of the Yuan period, but with additional elaborations. A loosely grounded composition was commonly employed on cizhou wares from the sixteenth century onward. This tall version was painted with a simplified floral motif appropriate to its decorative function.
