More Information

These prints by Tetsuya Noda (2015.9, 2015.11, 2017.10, and 2017.11) are part of his Diary series, underway since 1968. In these works, Noda illustrates an aspect of his life that day with a combination of woodblock printmaking, silkscreen, and photography. Some prints depict people from his inner circle or landscapes from his travels. In this selection, everyday objects are separated from their context to take on an air of mystery. One work depicts a roadside scene devoid of memorable landmarks. In Noda’s words, he relies on his camera “in order to document life. It’s easier than a sketch pad….[I] try to look for something usual, something that we don’t realize.”* Born in Kumamoto prefecture on the southern Japanese island of Kyushu, Noda is a professor emeritus at the Tokyo University of the Arts.
