Many of Okura Jiro's early works utilized camphor wood, an aromatic tree that often grows to enormous proportions around Shinto shrines and has sacred associations. (The enormous tree behind the shrine in Miyazaki Hayao's animated movie My Neighbor Totoro was camphor.) This work comes from a group of works made in the late 1970s in which the artist experimented with bowl-like forms.
