More InformationThe inscription on this ink painting reads "the year 74 [1974], painting the Chan, by Lu Shoukun." At this time Lu embarked on a new phase of stylistic development inspired by Chan (Japanese: Zen) Buddhism, featuring abstract motifs, bold brushwork, and strong contrasts in ink gradations and color that formed a strong visual effect. Initially focused on traditional Chinese landscapes, Lu became fascinated by various modern artistic movements later in his career, when he advocated the modernization of Chinese ink painting, as exemplified by this work.
