More Information
Wai Pongyu is one of the emerging artists in Hong Kong's increasingly vibrant artistic environment. His work consists primarily of pen and ink drawings of rhythms found in natural subjects. In the case of Lake Dream, the subject is the many small ripples made in the surface of a body of water by a light breeze. The myriad fine lines of the ripples are done in light blue ink.

This painting makes an interesting comparison with a landscape by Li Huayi. Both artists employ time-consuming and very precise techniques. Li Huayi starts with broad ink washes and then builds up a dense and richly textured surface of brushstrokes. Wai Pongyu's technique is equally complex and time-consuming but creates an entirely different surface and overall effect. Look closely and you will see that the entire surface of this work is covered with very fine curving lines deliberately controlled to create an illusion of wind on a watery surface.
