More InformationShinoda Toko, one of the pioneers of Japanese abstract painting and printmaking in the twentieth century, began her art training in calligraphy, specializing in ancient Chinese styles. Her own powerful, abstract style emerged in the 1950s, when she transformed calligraphic symbols into organic forms with her distinctive brushstrokes and rhythms, imbuing them with a primitive vitality.
