Maeda Chikubosai I was known best for incorporating natural bamboo rhizomes (underground runners) into Chinese-influenced baskets using traditional techniques. Here he combines rhizomes with bamboo branches to create a comma-shaped tray resembling the jade magatama jewels found in ancient tombs.
