In the 1800s and 1900s, bamboo artists in the area around Osaka excelled in making copies of intricate Chinese baskets, which were prized by practitioners of the Way of Tea and intellectuals. The box of this hanging flower basket is inscribed by Yabunouchi Chikusui Kyukyusai (1840–1917), grand master of the Yabunouchi school of Tea. He writes that this is a copy of a Chinese basket that was entitled "Shinto Priest" by Yabunouchi Fujusai Chikushin (1678–1745), an earlier grand master of the same Tea lineage.
