On View
Not on viewThis flower container of bronze is made to resemble a bamboo basket, right down to its rattan-wrapped bamboo feet. A relief scene of an ocean filled with gilded fish and other sea life is visible through the hexagonal plaiting. This kind of intricate bronze work is typical of the Meiji period (1868–1912), when Japanese metal art began to reflect the influence of Western tastes.
