Iizuka Rokansai is considered one of the forefathers of Japanese bamboo art in the modern era. He probably made this basket in the fiftieth year of his career as an artist. Rokansai was born in Tochigi prefecture in the Kanto region and studied under Iizuka Hosai I (1851–1916).
