More Information

Little is known of Atab Mahomed Khan, whose name appears in the caption of this photograph. Presumably the turbaned figure seated in the centre of the group, he is given the designation "Ambassador."

In its style and layout, the photograph resembles those taken by John Burke, a British commercial photographer who was stationed in Afghanistan during the 1880s. The calligraphic caption on the photograph's mount implies that it was originally pasted in an album.
