ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Samuel Bourne (1834–1912) was a prolific British photographer who spent seven years in India from 1863 to 1870 before returning to England. He extensively photographed the landscape and architecture of India and the Himalayan mountains. In partnership with the photographer Charles Shepherd, he established two commercial photo studios in India, in Shimla (Kashmir state) and Calcutta (Kolkata, Bengal state) under the name Bourne & Shepherd, which continued operations even after Bourne left India.
