Tamamura Kozaburo was a photographer who specialized in “souvenir photo albums” of Japan for sale to Western tourists and for export. He began his business in Tokyo and then moved to Yokohama around 1883, where he produced albumen photographs as well as collotypes. His photographs were usually hand colored, and he is said to have employed dozens of colorists to fulfill orders. Fifty photographs in this album include landscapes as well as staged studio photos of Japanese women and men of various occupations. Each photograph is labeled in English with a descriptive title for the benefit of Western travelers.
