On View
Not on viewThe subtle, moist washes Chang employed in this painting were inspired by the work of Wong Po-yeh (Huang Banruo 19011968). In the work shown here Chang conveyed Wong's ideals through subtle moist washes, masterfully turning the central void into a vapory ocean. During the 1960s Chang studied under Wong, who she has spoken of as "kind, humble, and respectful." Wong Po-yeh, through his sixty years of painstaking artistic pursuit, eventually reached a spiritual freedom from established rules. This exploration resulted in his fully realizing a poetic and fantastical style in his Hong Kong landscape paintings.
