Fang placed a group of small pine trees at the base of this landscape, creating a sense that the scene is at some distance from the viewer. The center of the painting is occupied by a steep rock-cut stair that leads to a small hut or mountain temple. Autumn is indicated by the use of an ocher wash over the landscape forms and for the leaves of the tree on the right.
