More InformationThe entire surface of this globular jar is decorated with a dragon design in iron oxide. Energetic and unrestrained brush lines depict the dragon’s twisting and turning form, which appears weightless amid the clouds as the dragon aims to reach a flaming pearl. The dragon, a mythical composite creature, symbolizes the east of four cardinal directions and the ruler of the land, and is believed to bring rain and good fortune. Compared to dragon motifs on another jar in the adjacent gallery, this particular dragon is depicted humorously, as a caricature of the fierce, majestic creature.
