More Information
In Japanese Buddhist rituals, the priest conducting the ceremony holds a long-handled censer, the emblem of his authority, as he leads processions into and out of the image hall of a temple. This censer consists of a brazier on a circular foot and a long handle that curves downward at the end to keep the implement level when placed on a flat surface. A simple geometric ornament decorates the end of the handle. The cover of this censer has a knob in the shape of an open lotus bud surrounded by pierced lotus motif scrollwork, which allows the incense smoke to flow through.
