More Information

For reasons that are unknown, this painting remained a work in progress and was never finished. The main figure of the seated woman has been finely completed (note especially the delicate brushwork at her hairline). Other elements of the painting were also worked upon, including the tiny cityscape in the distant background, but the sky and the terrace remain incomplete and the hilly landscape is partially finished.

At some point, further work on it was completely abandoned, and the paper began to be used for practice sketches such as the hunting scene in the background and the face in the bottom right corner.
