More Information
Born in Taiwan, Yu Peng was a versatile artist who explored various art forms including ink painting, wood engraving, ceramics, watercolor, sketching, and shadow puppetry. This painting, which was created early in his career, reflects a synthesis of diverse artistic influences. The long horizontal format and the use of brush and ink on paper reflect traditional Chinese painting, as does the theme of a garden landscape. However, some approaches are not seen in traditional Chinese painting, such as the dense structure of piled-up motifs and the print-like forms of silhouettes, which are unique to Yu Peng. The viewer will be struck by Yu’s purposefully artless approach and the collage-like composition full of naive forms.
