While studying in New York, Kim Ik-young went to a lecture by the well known ceramic artist Bernard Leach and heard him say one should learn everything about ceramic art by studying Joseon dynasty ceramics. Since then, her goal has been to create unembellished porcelain forms which have a sense of serenity and dignity. In this piece she emphasizes the whiteness of porcelain clay with her plain ceramic form and the imposing presence with clean lines and an unorthodox faceted surface texture. Her works are known to be without affectation combining the most traditional and the most contemporary characteristics.
