More Information

Though the nobleman seen here is not identified in an inscription, he is recognizable as a figure of authority. He is placed at the center of the composition and is larger than the two attendants. He is the only one seated and bearing a weapon, in accordance with courtly protocols. His necklaces and turban jewels stand out for their opulence. The gestures of the two other figures—the attendant holding a fly whisk and the supplicant offering a flower—reinforce the nobleman’s position of power in the social hierarchy.

The style of turban identifies the nobleman and other figures as Sikhs.
