More Information

This silk banner would be hung on the wall of a reception hall during a birthday celebration. Valued for its decorative and symbolic scheme, the imaginative depiction is associated with a traditional wish-making ceremony with images of historical and mythical figures. Through the auspicious presentation the host believed he would be blessed by Daoist deities and immortals and thus obtain longevity and great fortune.

The elder couple in the central pavilion is General Guo Ziyi (679–781) and his wife. Guo is renowned for reclaiming the capital of the Tang dynasty from invading tribal troops. Because of his loyalty and bravery, he became the prime minister and enjoyed tremendous wealth, fame, and good luck, as well as longevity and family prosperity. Guo family members and guests from the court accompany the couple in this celebration. Other attendees include Daoist immortals coming from heaven. On the left, from the top, are Liu Hai (carrying a string of coins), Zhang Xian (the child protector, with a bow), and the Monkey King (keeper of the heavenly peach garden). On the right are Dongfang Shuo, carrying a peach branch, along with two female musicians. The visits of immortals are meant to bring the Guos and their descendants blessings, wealth, and longevity.
