Standing Buddha flanked by two disciples

In Siam during the 1800s, as in Burma in the same period, it was common to show the Buddha attended on either side by his two most important disciples.

This painting has been cut down at both top and bottom, and would probably have had one or more scenes below the three main figures, as in B60D106 and 2006.27.122.4. Poles behind the disciples would have supported honorific tiered parasols similar to those in 2006.24.56.

This painting has suffered considerable loss of paint, revealing a rare feature: it was painted on textured cloth with a woven pattern of stripes alternating with bands of fretwork.
