More InformationLarge, fierce heads like this one were often placed over the entryways of Indonesian temples to ward off inauspicious forces. This longstanding tradition occurs in Indian temples as well. In Java the figure is often called the face of Kala, the god of destruction. In East Java and Bali, such figures are shown with a lower jaw and sometimes, as in this example, with hands held in a threatening gesture.
