More InformationThe upper parts of Angkorian temple towers were stepped, with decorative elements at the edges and corners of the steps to create a pleasing silhouette. This sculpture probably served as such an element. The figure, kneeling in front of a pointed arch with leaflike decoration, likely represented a directional guardian or planetary deity. If the implement once held in the figure’s right hand had survived, it might have identified him.
