More InformationThis architectural fragment would originally have been placed above a doorway or window of a temple. The human head, emphasized by the inward tilt of the lion heads on each side, would have occupied the central position in the complete piece. An Indian artistic treatise, dating perhaps as early as the late fourth century, mentions a “garland of lions” as one of the decorative elements on a Hindu temple.
