The Buddhist deity Green Tara
Tara's name translates literally as "star," and here a central Green Tara manifests on a stylized lotus surrounded by a constellation of self-similar emanations. Resting on yet another lotus, her right leg appears to extend out of the planar world of the painting into our three-dimensional world of experience;s uch depiction is typical for Green Tara, whom Himalayan Buddhists see as taking an active role in daily affairs, especially the alleviation of fear.
Green Tara complements White Tara (see B72D44) and is often mentioned in the same origin myths. According to one origin story, for example, Green Tara was born from Avalokiteshvara's right eye when the latter surveyed the vast expanse of suffering beings throughout the cosmos; White Tara was born from a tear falling from his left eye during the same incident.
